What is Taxation?
In general parlance, taxation is the process of assessing what amount needs to be paid to the Revenue Authorities for Financial or Non Financial transactions that an individual/ entity has conducted or entered into.
Types of Taxes?
Broadly Taxes are classified into 2 buckets
Direct Taxes - Direct Taxes are those taxes that are paid by an individual or entity directly to the Tax Authorities or Government. It is generally taxed on the income earned or distributed by the assessed individual or entity. Direct Taxes include the likes of Income Taxes, Wealth Taxes, Dividend Distribution Tax, Property Tax, Luxury Tax etc.
Indirect Taxes - Indirect Taxes are those taxes that are paid by an entity other than the assessed himself. These taxes are paid to another entity or organization as part of a transaction who then remits the amount to the Tax Authorities for the benefit of the actual payer. Examples: GST, Excise Duty, VAT, Customs etc.
